A delightful collection of rural towns, Ballard, Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Solvang comprise Santa Ynez Valley. Just a scenic half-hour drive over the Coastal Range from Santa Barbara, the valley, known for its thoroughbred horse ranches, attracted Hollywood in 2004. The film, “Sideways,” popularized it, and visitors arrived in throngs.
 
Originally slated to be built near the Old Mission Santa Inés, in 1881, it became known as Santa Ynez. Based on the hope that the Southern Pacific Railroad would come through the Valley, the town grew, attracting many businesses. Saloons, blacksmiths, general mercantile, pharmacies, feed stores, millinery, barbers, and even real estate agents established their business there, allowing the town to develop into the into the area’s hip cowboy culture we know today.
 
The eclectic population of ranchers, cowboys, city slickers and winemakers make Santa Ynez Valley a one-of-a-kind gem. A special combination of rural-agricultural heritage combined with a sophisticated “wine country” ambiance has fostered a region favored for exceptional wines. As one of five extraordinary American Viticultural Areas in Santa Barbara County’s wine region, over 50 varietals thrive within its diverse micro-climates.
